Read to the Dogs Program
Today Kendall and I did our first session ever at the Beaverton Library Read to the Dogs Program. We had four children signed up to read with us, but only three showed up. Kendall loves kids but doesn't get to be around them very much. She was pretty excited when we got there but calmed down once the kids started reading to her. She got to meet a lot of kids who were there just doing library stuff. The program at the library is part of the Dove Lewis/Delta Society program
Here's the info from the Beaverton Library:
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Saturdays, March 26, April 2 & 23, May 7 & 21 and June 4, 2011
10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Children's Area of Beaverton City Library Main
Improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to therapy dogs. The dog-and-handler teams are registered volunteers with Delta Society's Pet Partners Program, sponsored by DoveLewis. This program is for children who are reading on their own. Sessions are 20 minutes in length. Space in this program is limited.
This program is made possible by the Dove Lewis Animal Assisted Therapy and Education Program and Delta Society.
Registration is required. Please phone (503)350-3600 to register or sign up in person at the Children's Desk on the first floor of the library. Registration for the Spring 2011 session begins Wednesday, March 2, 2011.
If you have kids who are reading on their own, it's definitely worthwhile. They say they don't always fill all of the slots.

Pooches on the Green pictures
The rain held off long enough for us to stop by Pooches on the Green in Beaverton yesterday. We didn't stay long, but I did get a bunch of pictures to share with you. When we got there the pipe band was already playing. It was really loud, so I can only imagine how loud it was for the dogs.
One of the first dogs we ran into when we got there was Miss Muffett, the one in the pink argyle sweater. She was with her owner, Molly. Kendall and Miss Muffett have known each other for awhile, and it always seems like we're running into them around town at dog events. Miss Muffett is also a Delta Society dog and is involved in the Beaverton Read to the Dogs program that we're volunteering with next week. We also met Beauregard (forgive me, Molly, if I got his name wrong). He's a cutie.
There were tables set up by local dog businesses and organizations. There were lots of treats to be had. We even came home with a $5 off $25 coupon from Petco. I sure can use that. I've always wondered why PetSmart doesn't carry Natural Balance dog food.
There was a costume contest scheduled for later in the afternoon, and this little dog was all dressed up. She even had bright red braids!
We met this interesting dog. The lady with the dog told us what kind it is, but we both forget. So much for delivering useful information. It was a cute dog, though. Anyone know what it is?

Happy St. "Paw"trick's Day
I think Kendall has gotten wise to my holiday hat pictures. We had quite a time getting one good picture to post on the blog.
And, finally a picture. Whew! Hope your St. Patrick's Day is a fun one.
One good thing about this day is that I get to tell my favorite, really bad joke. Here it is:
Wait for it...
Wait for it...
That's pretty bad, huh?
Check back on Friday for a fun dog event happening in Beaverton this weekend.
There was some rolling around |
Then, Rico, the cat, had to see what was going on |
And he got really close |
Then, I put on the hat |
And Kendall was really interested |
There was some cat toy chasing |

Home again, Home again, Jiggity-jig
As I mentioned in my last post, I was off to San Francisco last week for a big trade show. It's amazing how an empty hall can get transformed into a vibrant trade show over a couple of days. We started with this on Tuesday:
And ended with this by Wednesday afternoon:
While I was there, we got a visit from someone well known in the science education world.
Does he look familiar? He stops by every year to see what's new.

Cavalier Day is Sunday
Cavalier Day is held the first Sunday of each month at Urban Fauna in the Parks blocks in downtown Portland. It runs from 11 am to 1 pm, and it's FREE. It's a chance to bring your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel out to play with others of the same breed. It's so much fun to watch them all interact. It's like a little cocktail party for dogs with all the mingling that goes on. There's hardly ever a bark or rough play - it's the Cavalier way.
If you've ever thought of owning a Cavalier, this is a good chance to see a lot of them in one place. There's usually a pretty good crowd there. These are pictures from the February Cavalier Day.
Unfortunately, I won't be there. I'm headed off to our biggest trade show of the year, NSTA, in San Francisco. Kendall might make it, if I can talk my husband into taking her. I'll be back for St. Patrick's Day with lots of fun pictures and a fun dog event.
